Samir dozed, lulled away from the hum of fluorescent lamps and the meaningless chatter of a podcast whispering in his ear.
"Wake up!" A hand awoke the sysadmin. Hiroshi's face was a little too close for comfort. Garlic and chicken was on his co-worker's breath.
After scoping the area around his cube, "Shit. Thanks."
"Man, if you lose your job then I lose my job."
"Fair."
"What's goin' on?" Hiroshi lowered his voice. "Second time this week."

Hiroshi's voice was clipped, "Of course it is boring. It's why you get paid." He pointed overhead, "These lights hum at 120 Hz and the frequency's shown to enhance cognition. You're getting things done then running out the clock 'til quittin' time or the arrival of an emergency ticket."
"One of those would be nice."
"Yes. But once a week at best. You are the best. I am your best assistant. Our brains are amped to hyperdrive. We're already overdosing on caffeine and Adderall." 2/x

Samir sighed, "I wish I didn't need this job."
"Same." Hiroshi's annoyance grated. "But two more years. We vest. We invest. And head on home on the sunny side of the street." He glared on his way out of the cubicle.
Samir swiped open his phone to talk with Dave. He knew it was ridiculous using the phone when Dave was all around him.
A message was waiting. "Yeah, I heard. You're bored."
"Yup. Sad neither you or DIV9 could solve capitalism."

Dave continued, "Wanna try something?"
It was 3:37. Six p.m. was an eternity away. "Yeah, okay."
The lamp hum rose in frequency. Light flickered hypnotically. His hairy hand became transparent until the phone clattered to the floor.
Hiroshi peeked in to find clothes, still warm, draped on the Aero chair.
A phone laid face down on the floor.
