@straphanger for train journeys up to 5h - like Beijing-Shanghai it totally beats the plane. More comfort and you end up directly in the city center. Air travel with the trip to the airport, check-in and whatnot takes about the same time
@straphanger
Approximate time comparisons:
Leg Distance Rail Time Flying Time (gate-to-gate) Door-to-Door Flying Rail Advantage
Toronto to Ottawa ~450 km ~1.5 hours ~1 hour 4-5 hours 2.5-3.5 hours faster
Ottawa to Montreal ~450 km ~1.5 hours ~1 hour 4-5 hours 2.5-3.5 hours faster
Montreal to Quebec City ~270 km ~55 minutes ~45 minutes 3.5-4.5 hours 2.5-3.5 hours faster
Toronto to Quebec City ~1,170 km ~3.9 hours ~2 hours 5.5-7 hours 1.5-3 hours faster

@straphanger took EU a bit longer, but I'm sure their reduction in air traffic is similar, if not bigger, as there are better onward connections.

All you need is political will.
