@straphanger for train journeys up to 5h - like Beijing-Shanghai it totally beats the plane. More comfort and you end up directly in the city center. Air travel with the trip to the airport, check-in and whatnot takes about the same time

@straphanger took EU a bit longer, but I'm sure their reduction in air traffic is similar, if not bigger, as there are better onward connections.
