Installing #FreeDOS on actual hardware (a 486dx40) and it's like watching paint dry. I had completely forgotten how slow things were back then :)

The first disk took the longest to process (about 20 minutes). After the second disk it started to pick up the pace, and have me changing disks every few minutes. I'm on disk 4 of 7 now. Fingers crossed it'll end up with a working installation!

Somehow it didn't want to see the entire 1GB CF card and only used half of it. I can live with that I believe.

@freedosproject @denz Indeed, no CD-ROM drive in the machine. I have one, somewhere, but all my retro stuff is still packed up from the last move. Not for much longer though, but well, it is now :)

@gmc @gmc @freedosproject That was my first thought from your post: Which disk is going to be corrupt. 🤪

Had that soo many times. Especially when having to print a big report on the university laser printer. Winrar the report to multiple floppies, cycle to the university, unpack the disks. And of course one was corrupt.
The solution was going there with a double set of disks. 🫣

The number of times I've set at my desk with a stack of floppies trying to install FreeBSD...

Ah that brings back memories of the time (maybe 95-96ish) when I tried to install Linux by floppy on a 386.
Must have been Ygdrassil or an early Slackware CD release.
I wrote all the packages to disks.. almost 80 disks. 😂
First attempt, disk 40-something failed.
2nd attempt, disk 70-something failed.
3rd time was the charm! 🤣

@notawizard Hehe, yeah, and that was with brand new floppies. The ones I use now are at least 30 years old and may not have always stored optimally during all that time.

I had disk 4 failing, rewrote it to another disk. Second attempt, disk 5 failed. Rewrote that, verified it too, all looked good. Third try, disk 4 failed again.

I think I may have to cheat on this one. Either install it in 86box on my modern machine or use the gotek.
