The U.S. will not be immune to high jet fuel costs. Sure would have been smart to build an electrified passenger rail network starting about 30 years ago:

@LakeshoreRail It is so strange we've made almost zero progress on this project. Living in Chicago is a constant reminder the US peaked many decades ago. The L forms a better transportation network than almost any other place in the country and there are stations literally 100 years old. Really wish we had electrified intercity travel as well, both of our Amtrak trains broke down this weekend and they aren't even that old.
@andrew773 Agree. We peaked with the moon landing, but even then our passenger rail system was falling apart. The L is great, but needs the equivalent of a "ring road". People don't just want to go in and out of downtown.
@LakeshoreRail Right now we're hoping for at least a well implemented BRT corridor to accomplish what you suggest unfortunately we acted too slow and now we'll have to fund it ourselves locally. Hopefully with our new funding formula we'll be able to get it done despite the hostile federal government.
