TIL about a new [to me] society of geospatialists in Australia: ASIERA - the Australasian Spatial Information Education and Research Association

...of course there's no web site. Just whispers in the anzlic parchments, around water coolers...

...yet here they are, poppin' up to label a conference stream and apparently representing a significant part of the spatial information industry!

It is probably the same 5 old prunes and their anointed proto-prunes. Mark safe to ignore...

#gischat

It is low key hilarious that in two decades of research aligned geospatial work I've never heard of them.

...and I will *never tire* of hanging shit on these kinds of idk... professional circle jerks?

They're the reason Australia can't have good things like open, transparent, independent geospatial infrastructure.

Why we have button pushers who don't know what a fucking file system is at the end of a graduate certificate in GIS (absolutely not the fault of the learner!!)...

...and so on.

...I'm also very happy to try and create change!

Unfortunately that requires... being hired into a relatively senior role by the Right Place, then inevitably distributing power away from people who want to keep it.

and oh wow do I ever know how that rolls out in modern academia-adjacency 🫩
