NASA's Artemis II Live Mission Coverage (Official Broadcast)

YouTube

☝️ Artemis is off to the moon.

Continue to watch this NASA feed for live mission coverage. This YouTube channel will continue live 7/24 for the next 10 days throughout the mission.

A great account/thread to follow for more detailed information on Artemis is here from @AkaSci

@AkaSci

Whew. That was crazy.

For about 10 minutes they lost comms with the spacecraft.

They rebooted the ground communications system, and are now talking with the spacecraft again.

Apparently the astronauts could hear mission control, but mission control could not hear the astronauts. Some bidirectional data comms were never lost.

@AkaSci

Continues to be fascinating...

Right now, the start up of the toilet has hit a snag (amber light). They are trouble shooting the system.

Everything else seems 'nominal', meaning OK.

@AkaSci

Press conference on right now.

Super interesting and informative.

Just want to comment on how refreshing it is to watch dry uncensored straightforward public agency reporting versus the type of PR and boosterism coverage we get from private space corporations who carefully restrict information and even cut off if things don't go well.

Kudos to NASA!

@AkaSci

Live on board images just started.

So cool!

@AkaSci

Now they are performing some maneuvers to pilot the spacecraft as would be required in docking maneuvers.

They are going to undock from the ICPS (the first stage) and then approach the ICPS as if it were something they were actually docking with, coming close (15m) from the ICPS.

Edit: Incredible!!!

Edit2: What a great spacecraft! He is reporting how responsive, precise and smooth the maneuvers are.

#Artemis

@AkaSci

Spacecraft is performing great.

Now they are going to move in to 10m...

@AkaSci

At 30 meters...

@AkaSci

10m arrival...

@AkaSci

Zoomed in fine maneuver control...

@AkaSci

They have now backed away from the ICPS and are going to turn the ICPS and perform some docking maneuvers with the side of the ICPS...

@AkaSci

Working great! Test complete!

Edit... Glover: "This flies very nicely."

@AkaSci

Everything seems to continue to go well. The astronauts are stowing gear and getting ready to sleep for four hours. They will then wake up and perform a burn to adjust their orbit. Then they will sleep again for five hours. After this sleep period they will begin preparing for the burn maneuver that will take them to the moon.

Pleasant dreams and good luck to our brave explorers.

@AkaSci

The astronauts are waking up now and getting ready for day 2 of their mission. All is going well.

Wiseman and Glover will begin their day setting up and checking out Orion’s flywheel exercise device.

Later, the main event of the day – the translunar injection burn, the maneuver that will set them on the path to the moon, will be done by Orion’s main engine on the spacecraft’s European Service Module.

@AkaSci

They have just reported all GO for the TLI burn in about 3 1/2 hours. This is very good news.

h/t AkaSci: Artemis II TLI scheduled for 7:49 p.m. EDT.

@AkaSci

Edit Wrong: [Apparently they continue to have problems with the PWD (Personal Waste Device...]

Edit: Toilet is fixed for more: https://apnews.com/article/nasa-artemis-astronauts-moon-6ef3f195b4d4f8abcbfa908cacea6da6

Correction: They are discussing gathering some water before the TLI as a backup since they had a water valve problem yesterday, which has been resolved, but as a contingency they want to gather water before the TLI burn.

Artemis II astronauts rocket toward the moon after circling Earth

NASA’s Artemis II astronauts have fired their engines and are blazing toward the moon. The so-called translunar ignition came 25 hours after liftoff, putting the three Americans and one Canadian on course for a lunar fly-around early next week. Their Orion capsule has bolted out of orbit around Earth and chased after the moon nearly 250,000 miles away. It is the first engine firing for a moon crew since Apollo 17 set out on that era’s final moonshot in 1972. NASA had the Artemis II crew stick close to home for a day to test their capsule’s life-support systems before clearing them for lunar departure.

AP News

@AkaSci

They are about 30 minutes from the Trans Lunar Injection or TLI burn, scheduled for 7:49 p.m. EDT, that will sent the spacecraft out of Earth orbit and to the Moon. They have completed the work with the exercise equipment and the contingency water collection. The pace of operations is increasing with the need to get things squared away before the TLI.

☝️ We are now 5 minutes away from the TLI burn. They are doing final attitude adjustments prior to the burn. The burn will last about 5 minutes. Good time to tune in.

Update: Orion is now in burn attitude

@mastodonmigration @AkaSci It's horrifying to me that NASA is now whiter than it was 80s. DOGE's 20% plus layoffs of NASA staff seem to have primarily focused on PoC and white women. The male, pale NASA I'm seeing now is reminiscent of the one which segregated the brilliant black female 'Hidden Figures' into the back of the bus while they were key to the moon landings.

@jonesmurphy @AkaSci

That may be true, however Victor Glover, the pilot, is Black.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Glover

Victor Glover - Wikipedia

@mastodonmigration @AkaSci Clarence Thomas is black. Tokenism is horrible. Don't do it. NASA suddenly cannot seem to find any Asian scientists, engineers, etc. This ain't about one black token at all.

@jonesmurphy @AkaSci

Fair enough. Not disagreeing with your point, or apologizing for racism at NASA. Just saying, having followed his career, that Glover is a super impressive guy.

@mastodonmigration @AkaSci I'm a lot more familiar with Glover than you are. What you tried to do is tokenism to undermine what I wrote. Don't do that. It's horrible.

@jonesmurphy @AkaSci

OK. Apologies. No disagreement with your point about the DOGE reductions and other layoffs at NASA.

@mastodonmigration @AkaSci I'm a physicist. While I was a grad student at Caltech, I turned down a job offer at NASA. I do not believe that I would be welcome at NASA today, nearly 40 yrs later. NASA is a very uncomfortable place for the few people of color now left on staff, just as it was for those brilliant "Hidden Figures" working in segregation at NASA.
@mastodonmigration @AkaSci The Apollo programme didn't have any toilets. Astronauts were just wearing diapers, used ones were put into plastic bags.

Also, take a look at this dashboard from someone in Canada (not the Canadian Space Agency).

@mastodonmigration
Big thumbs up from the crew for the maneuverability of the Orion spacecraft.

It's amazing how they can make small precise transversal and rotational movements in free space.

@AkaSci

πŸ’― Anyone who has ever played Kerbel Space Program knows how important a good maneuvering spacecraft is.

So pleased Orion is working so well!

@mastodonmigration @AkaSci That was so amazing to watch! 🀩 Even though it did interrupt my beauty sleep (at 3:30 am local), it was totally worth it! πŸ›°οΈπŸ›°οΈ
