It's Dogwood Season!

Dogwoods, although small trees, have big impact in the understory of forests in the Eastern U.S. and Canada.

@joewynne I remember as a kid when these blanketed the woods in North Georgia. And then that fungus came through and changed all of that.
I have no doubt that you know, but the white or pink, are modified leaves. The actual flowers are those those little yellow things right there in the middle.

You are thinking about bracts, the "petals" are actually bracts, like poinsettias. Modified leaves like you said.

@joewynne yes it was. As a teenager, I was friends with a girl from Montana. She moved back to Montana, but she was in love with the dogwoods. For several years, I would take film pictures of the dogwoods and send some to her via postal mail.
Now, it’s rare to see them away from the wood edges. They don’t grow much in the actual under story anymore.
