i’ve been enjoying posts about self hosting recently, I appreciate people writing about what’s possible even if it’s not something I want to do right now or maybe ever

The Inventory I Should Have Done Years Ago

🖼️"Ulysses at the Table of Circe (The Odyssey of Homer)." Line engraving after John Flaxman by James Parker, 1805. Metropolitan Museum of Art, public domain. Flaxman developed this outline style in Italy, inspired by Greek vase painting. Flaxman's outline illustrations were so popular they were "pirated" (Read: copied) across Europe.

@b0rk “Is this necessary? No. Does it improve my life? In no practical way. Does it generate additional complexity? Absolutely. Should you do it? Oh good heavens no. But you can…”

This is a great summary.

@b0rk sharing just in case it’s relevant: the first seven posts on my blog, walk through in excruciating detail what I did to spin up a self-managed blog server

@b0rk I've setup something very similar to that second link - a minimal, inexpensive VPS, with a VPN setup to my home server via wireguard, and then hosting everything in-house, using borgmatic to backup locally and to a cloud location.

I was surprised at how easy it was to set that up, and I've been gradually adding more to the home server over time - recently setup Mattermost so I can move our family off IG messaging as well.

I also realize it's not for everyone.

@b0rk Thanks! This is terrific. I've fumbled around with some of the steps, and encountered the inventory and dependency graph problems. My wife pointed out another problem. We have a Nextcloud server running on a RPI, and it's lovely, but she is anxious that should anything happen to me, there wouldn't be any obvious path to getting the server fixed/maintained.
