Twenty years of the Global War on Terror cost the United States $8 trillion dollars. It's not just the cost of bombs and soldiers, but also the long-term costs, such as VA health care for wounded and disabled vets, the cost of borrowing to finance the war, and so on.

If we had not invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, we'd be $8 trillion ahead. That's enough to run the United States federal government for a year.
