This is regarding the birthright citizenship case that's gone to SCOTUS. This is the Solicitor General. It is enraging to read this.
What the fuck is "American citizenship" and why is it a "gift"? )These are rhetorical questions; I know what the subtext is of this because I live in it, even though most Canadians probably don't believe in this and our government isn't currently flirting with the idea.) People from Europe came to this hemisphere and settled on its land and decided to establish the concept of "citizenship" here on the premise that once white people are born here they do not need to prove themselves as belonging on the land, or the land belonging to them. The extension of this to non-white people was gradually, with much resistance, eventually applied, and naturalized citizenship was established too. This was turned into a PR campaign about freedom and equality that makes our countries better than others. And now they're explicitly saying that they never believed that.
I'm not surprised but I'm enraged just because this thing I already observed is now at the forefront of my mind. I understand that it's part of white privilege to only get this way when they say the quiet part out loud; the people they don't think are entitled to the "gift" know this every day. But I'm pointing this out when it is brought in front of me, just to make a note that this exposes the hollowness of the values we claim make a free society.
Fuck fascism, fuck the state, borders are violence, citizenship is a scam.
