As much as the Christian fundamentalists tried to tell themselves that this exodus of young people was all people who "never believed" & "weren't serious" about their faith, it was some of *the most* devout among us leading that charge.

People who "aren't serious" about the faith tend to leave quietly, just dropping off the map, because they were never fully committed. Not their circus, not their monkeys.

When you've got crowds of people analyzing & critiquing every single aspect of the culture & belief system they grew up in, you're probably looking at sincere believers.

I think they are all still in shock that "Christian education" somehow didn't lock us in. I was part of a huge experiment in indoctrinating kids that really took off in the 80s & 90s. We were the great hope for the future. This was their PLAN & as harmful as it was, it didn't do what it was supposed to.

@artemis some of us took them seriously. that's on them, not us.

i took it seriously when they said follow your conscience even if no one around you does. i took it seriously when they said to love everyone and care for the vulnerable. i took it seriously right out of the community

my siblings and i laugh about the valuable lessons we were taught but weren't expected to learn. it worked out
