So I guess @opencollective is basically dead, huh.

Now on top of asking users to pay for a "platform tip", they're also taking money from the other side and charging fiscal hosts and collectives absurd monthly fees.

And while looking into this I find out that they started working on a "new web3 branch of Open Collective" according to https://github.com/opencollective/.github/blob/main/profile/README.md

I guess they have to shovel money to Anthropic to slopcode Persona integrations?

I guess it's time to look at self-hosting as a stopgap, but realistically given the direction I expect them to go either closed source or full slop within months-years so heh.
@delroth @opencollective Do you know if they have a proper announcement for the new fees? I just had a terse email dropped into my inbox that explains very little
@delroth @opencollective Wait, apparently the email I got says it's effective starting today? wtf
@JosJuice @opencollective yeah, even though when I last looked OC were saying orgs created before March would be grandfathered into the old pricing...
@delroth @JosJuice We tried to reach affected Organizations per email last July and more recently in March, and got constructive feedback since then. Updated pricing for Organizations, designed for long-term sustainability - Open Finance Consortium

TL;DR: We are introducing a new pricing structure for Organizations. We have already been in touch privately with all impacted Organizations. The new model replaces percentage-based fees with a usage-based...

@opencollective @delroth If I'm interpreting the new rules correctly, it is true that the organization I administer can use the $0 plan. Still, it's very unexpected for this kind of change to come into effect without any prior notice being sent

@JosJuice @delroth We are sorry, we only proactively reached Organizations that would be on a paid tier. But we only relied on the public announcement for others.

Open Collective

How can we help?

@opencollective this statement is corp speak at its worse.

> Instead, pricing is based on the operational load placed on the platform, making it more predictable and more closely aligned with real usage.

Expenses have a $1 operation cost for OC? Really? It's a checkbox form where OC is literally doing nothing, the collective is reviewing, the fiscal host is doing the transfer, when it's automated it's using the fiscal host's Wise account, etc.

@opencollective this is such a giant bait and switch and I don't think you realize how much trust you're burning there. It's extrement disappointing, OC was really a force for good. But I guess you just had to be greedy and decide that 15% platform tips and whatever % is collected on host fees isn't enough...

For now I guess we'll self host since it's not like OC was providing us much operational value anyway (other than like... sending emails, I guess?).

@delroth It's a bit complicated, but the platform at opencollective.com is from a different team and legal entity than the web3 project. We tried to explain that in our blog post announcing the move to a non-profit in October 2024 https://opencollective.com/ofico/updates/a-new-home-for-the-open-collective-platform-same-mission

Thanks to good feedback from people in the community, the Persona thing is now gone.
