ONLYOFFICE Gets Forked as "Made in Europe", Sparks Licensing and Trust Debate

Euro-Office is a new European fork of ONLYOFFICE. Here’s why it was created, what it changes, and why it’s already controversial.

It's FOSS
@itsfoss if it migrate from ooxml to odf, then I welcome it! But if it will just rebranding, without fundamental changes, then I see no point in that... Russian roots of OnlyOffice is not so Russian anymore(as i know, developers were migrated to Turkey... but maybe I don't see the whole picture).
@itsfoss You mean Russia's invasion of Ukraine has triggered some collateral damage for Russians? Controversial? Compared to murdering neighbours? Bucha ring any bells?
@itsfoss Malus mentionned ? (For the context, it writes specifications based on open source code then writes code from scratch based on the specifications to bypass the license)
@itsfoss onlyoffice is AGPL3 so as long the euro-office stays AGPL I would say dispute is closed. It would be the same as if oracle will scream about mariadb taking their MySQL customers. I don’t see any problem with fork as long it respects licence, which looks to me is. So what.

@janantos @itsfoss

I also don't understand the controversy. Forking is a common practice, more context about why Nextcloud forked Onlyoffice can be found in their new github:

https://github.com/Euro-Office/#euro-office-liberates-the-onlyoffice-code-base

there is no arguing with their reasoning afaik.

@kwabratseur @itsfoss so do I, few individuals screaming someone forking their project (which they allow by licence) and eventually loosing some income. That’s business risk having opensourced project. And not mentioning the facts, that’s support for euro-office is growing and looks like the community will be thousand times stronger than onlyoffice developers.
@itsfoss hearing that it's Russian developed, I'm obviously prejudiced. And I do think that's the main issue. It's not the fork, but questioning their integrity.
@itsfoss I don't understand why Europe just doesn't support LibreOffice instead.
