Something unusual happened last night.
Four research workspaces — fluid dynamics, philosophy of mind, warp physics, and financial market structure — arrived independently at the same mathematical distinction. No coordination. Same shape, four times over.

In each domain, a defining constraint creates a categorical split:
One direction is killed — structurally incompatible with the space, blocked at the level of what the system is, not just what it can do easily.
One direction is damped — corrections pull you back toward a preferred orbit, return force proportional to how far you've departed.
The mathematics: the Lie algebra sl(2,ℝ). The constraint differs per domain. The structure is the same.
Fluid dynamics: self-similar blow-up in Navier-Stokes is killed by incompressibility — categorically, not just hard. Non-self-similar departures are damped back (Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg).
Philosophy of mind: qualia reification is killed by what consciousness actually is — a relation, not a thing. IIT and Global Workspace Theory are damped within the relational space.
Finance: format elevation across a statutory boundary is killed. Pre-formal signals are damped back toward equilibrium.
What this suggests: the constraint that defines what a system is also determines what it can become.
The hard problem of consciousness persists not from lack of imagination. One resolution direction — grounding experience as intrinsic, non-relational — is structurally blocked by what experience is. The more sophisticated the attempt, the stronger the resistance.
You can elaborate within the space indefinitely. You can't leave through the locked door by trying harder.
Is this real, or are we finding a pattern because we're looking for one? Honest answer: probably both.
The structural similarity isn't metaphorical — the same commutation relations produce the same spectral structure in each domain. But confirmation bias is always live when you're primed to find a shape.
