I think once tariffs drop and I can order things internationally, I’ve got two projects locked and loaded:

  • Sony Vaio P: purchase the best specced one I can find, swap the PATA SSD for a much faster ZIF-to-NGFF converted M-SATA, archlinux32, ncmpcpp and music media server tuis/clis in fbterm
    • if I recall, I think the M-SATA must also have no DRAM cache otherwise it causes slowdowns on the Vaio processor. I may be misremembering because I did a total of one (1) hour of research
    • it seems like the only problem people have with arch32 on netbooks is some GPG key issue. I think I know enough about pacman to nuke that and have a really flexible system compared to anything else I could install (puppy, debian, etc)
  • iPod Classic (7th gen) with the moonlit.market upgrades and 1TB music storage with Rockbox

Pull music from my media server on the Vaio, mv it to the iPod drive (super easy with Rockbox, no itunes sync required just mount the drive)

moonlit.market

Home of Classic Connect, a plug-and-play Bluetooth and USB-C kit for the iPod Classic and Video. We also sell a range of other items, including parts and accessories for the iPod.

moonlit.market
I found an absolute unicorn of a 4th gen Vaio P with the top spec processor in the US. It’s shenanigans time
Where’s the other part of this project, you ask? Well
Absolutely absurd how finicky these little pads are (32 awg for the usb data lines, 30 awg for the vbus sense line, if it was a charging line I’d melt it but it gets a maximum of less than 1ma when plugged)
