In Cajun country, this administration’s immigration policy has hit a nerve. “Our ancestors would roll over in their graves to see Cajuns supporting mass deportation,” says Dawkins. “It goes against our culture, our values.” Disgraceful that the governor is an ACADIAN. #USDemocracy #Voices4Victory

In Cajun Country, mass deportation is personal

In 1755, Acadian families were driven from their homes. Under Trump’s mass deportation agenda, their descendants see others meet the same fate.

The Current
The story began as mass deportation. In 1755, Acadians were driven from their homes in Nova Scotia & dispersed across the globe. Many later came to Louisiana. The memory lives on,passed down through family histories, music, folklore & tradition. Themes of identity & belonging appear over & over.
In the current climate, for some in Acadiana, collective memory is more than history: it’s a lens for what’s happening & is now shaping their response. "Governor" Jeff Landry, Acadian, doesn't care. His only interest is in serving his master. But Cajuns are waking up. He may be in for a surprise.
