Just helped neighbors with a printing problem, more of a Windows 11 problem. Their printer is a black-and-white Brother laser, and seems to work fine. But Windows 11 has been refusing to play nice with the printer this past month, in a few different ways.

Today, they couldn't print tax form PDFs. They'd download the PDF, click to open it from the Chrome downloads notification drop-down thingy, it would open in Edge (the system default), and then ... hang.

Well, it would refuse to print. No error message, but no printed page, either.

Loathe as I am to install an Adobe product, I also need to work with tools they are familiar with. Installed Adobe Reader from the Microsoft Store, it opens the PDF just fine and has no trouble at all with printing. Problem solved, or at least circumvented.

As I go to leave, my neighbor asks (purely in jest), "You wouldn't to have a laptop I could borrow for a month, would you?" I respond that I do.

I picked up a 2017 Dell off #Freecycle last year, all it needed was a new battery. Now it's a functioning laptop again, running LMDE 7. I showed him where the WiFi settings are, and the icon for Firefox, and now the neighbors are good to go for a trip to visit family and play with their grandchild.
