I wish @[email protected] would understand the connection between #StreetsForPeople and #VisionZeroBoston She's fighting street redesigns that save lives but also create street life and invigorate communities. Look at this success story in Chattanooga, TN www.instagram.com/reel/DU0_yZq...

Things I notice from this video: you can see the pedestrian overflow area includes things like storm drains that are currently where we put bike lanes Deliberately designing bike lanes to be high quality, and not just scraps of road leftovers makes travel calmer and more predictable
They also built elevated "floating bus stops", which mean the bike lane runs behind them. This is an alternate (and some say less efficient) to center running bus lanes, which have caused controversy in Boston The raised bus bumpout is kinder to pedestrians especially those with disabilities
DEDICATED LOADING ZONES. Boston has really abdicated curb management which is why delivery truck drivers, food delivery and rideshare drivers are either double parked, in bike lanes, or blocking crosswalks or fire hydrants These folks need road space to do their jobs!
The pedestrian space gives more flexibility. This is their night market! I love when @[email protected] shuts down streets for events but this configuration means the restaurants have plenty of space without a full street shutdown You get commerce and community on demand!
But obviously if you want to do a full street carnival like our #OpenStreetsBoston that's always an option, and they do two of those yearly #BostonOpenStreets
Sadly, just like in the Seaport on Sleeper St & Center St in West Roxbury, people were killed on this road before the city decided to reconfigure the street to make safety a priority & put people first. Why is the loss of precious human life the only thing that allows change @[email protected] ?
Safer streets turn a dangerous stroad into a true Complete Street. Making a street safer and friendly so you can safely travel outside of a car lets us all exhale, slow down and invite community, greet our neighbor and have a conversation, shop and live our lives #CarLiteBoston @[email protected]
