Conversion therapy is now illegal in Canada, marking a major milestone in LGBTQ2S+ rights in this country. After parliamentarians came together to unanimously pass legislation to eradicate the harmful practice in late 2021, the Criminal Code sanctions came into force on Jan. 7.
I understand to some extent where Kagan and Sotomayor were coming from in their statement that the terms of the Colorado ban were too overly broad, but similarly part of their reasoning astounds me because a ban on actual gender therapy would be a baby and bathwater situation.
We don't want these assholes able to torture children to suicide, but at the same time I know a lot of trans and NB folks, and folks who have trans and NB kids, who would absolutely benefit from some positive, encouraging therapy.
Releasing this decision on the Trans Day of Visibility, meanwhile, had to have been a calculated 'fuck you'.
@theogrin @adr I really appreciate the nuance here and you’ve said it a lot more concisely than any of the rebuttals I could devise to the (viscerally completely understandable, but tactically pyrrhic) condemnations I’ve seen today (lots of damnable stuff happening, but strategically this was the best of a very bad situation long in the making, or all they have to do is appoint a Bobby Brainworms committee to decide the science on every other topic the way he’s been working on vaccines.)
I’d like to boost but it’s kind of powder-keggy out there.
