I remember some VHS tapes I had when I were little played seemingly random DTMF tones at the beginning. I wondered why for years and have just found out.
From Wikipedia:
"DTMF signaling tones may also be heard at the start and/or end of some prerecorded VHS videocassettes. Information on the master version of the videotape is encoded in the DTMF tones. The encoded tones provide information to automatic duplication machines, such as format, duration and volume levels in order to replicate the original video as closely as possible."
So there you go.

@KaraLG84 You may already know this, but if you hear a rumbling noise at the start of a comercial cassette its actually a very slow beep noise which cignifies to the duplication machine to cut the tape at that point.
@andrew So that's what that's for. I didn't know that.
@KaraLG84 On another tack sorry for not engaging with you in a while. I wondered what had happened to you and saw you in a mention the other week. Seemed our Mastodon accounts were in a weird follow state which I have had with a few accounts. I had to reset the follow request at my end and re-follow you. Not sure why that happens sometimes.
@andrew Oh it's fine, these things happen. :)
