RE: https://dice.camp/@artemis/116318325361294776

Years ago I decided to give Andy Weir a try because everyone was so complimentary of The Martian. I picked up Artemis which was his most recent book at the time. It was so saturated in misogyny, extremely weirdly sexual, and seemingly Islamophobic as well. I DNF'd and resolved to never consume anything else from him. I can only assume The Martian and Project Hail Mary are liked by people who appear to be progressive because Weir is writing a white man as the MC and he likes the character.

ive been a #hater for six and a half years.
@renardroi I haven't read anything of his, thanks for the warning. My reaction to the film The Martian was how stereotypically American it was. The team has to go back and save the hero they left behind through some wild idea that risks their lives but somehow works. Ugh. They might as well have played football on Mars.
@noam I don't believe I've ever seen the movie tbh. all my knowledge of it has been observed secondhand and also one time I read fanfiction for a different fandom where they took the premise of The Martian (trapped on Mars?) but instead of a rugged hero saving himself...I believe there were maybe werewolves on the moon? moon werewolves? that saved him. kind of iconic to me
