100 species observed. Is that 100 out of 100 or 100 out of 300? Extrapolation curves flatten when sampling is near-complete — each additional sample adds almost nothing. 1/3
If the curve is still climbing steeply, the inventory isn't done and comparing raw richness across sites is comparing sampling effort, not diversity. spacc runs both the spatial and random accumulation side by side. 2/3
Where the spatial curve runs ABOVE the random, nearby sites share more species than expected by chance. Where it flattens first, the landscape is more homogeneous than the random baseline predicts. The gap between the two curves is the signal. Not the counts. #ecology#rstats 3/3
