I've been a fan of Kate Marvel's writing for as long as she's been a NASA scientist discovering important things about global warming. A riotously funny tweeter/blogger, she went on to write beautiful essays probing the emotional, existential depths of knowing what we're doing to the only known planet with whiskey.

The selfish thought does strike me that maybe she'll have more time to write. But good writing comes not just from having a way with words but from Having Things To Say, in this case from doing science that matters. Any civilization with a shred of sense would do its best to maintain places like NASA GISS where people like Marvel could nerd away at the coalface of discovery to their hearts' content. And in that coal-mine metaphor, her resignation is a canary.
