I assume they called it Project Hail Mary because actually crafting a well written story with a basically new/unknown IP is the actual last thing that anyone in Hollywood would contemplate as the basis of a movie.

I enjoyed the movie, but I don’t think it was that much of a gamble. The Martian set a pretty decent expectation for success.
