If youre protesting today PLEASE wear an n95/kn95 mask! It seriously helps protect you & people around you! It isnt good because of "surveillance", it is good because we want other people pushing progress to be alive, healthy, & active in their communities.
Long covid/post viral illness risks that.

(Please dont suggest use for obscuring faces, please read the whole thread)

And, please wear a mask to more than just protesting. By normalizing them outside of just protest you can help fight fascist crackdowns on masking in public that seriously risks public health for everyone who breathes air.

I dont use the "surveillance" talking point because I believe that too easily can be used, even by well meaning regular folks, against progressive and public health caring people, especially disabled people, as a reason to ban masks.

Masks are life saving medical devices, we all need to keep that as our focus first and foremost.

@Trenton_Hoshiko I overheard two different protesters today who were not masked and were in close proximity to others tell people that members of their immediate family weren't there with them because they were home sick with covid. Hello! If someone in your household has covid and you're out chanting and singing in a crowd with no mask, wtf are you doing (other than the fascists' work for them)?
@Trenton_Hoshiko That said, the surveillance thing is a tough issue to discuss. Mass surveillance is evil and private citizens (but not people being paid to act on behalf of the government and supposedly the people) do have a right & valid reason to protect themselves from it, whether through physical disguise, VPNs, ad blockers, etc., but medical masks are primarily for medical purposes (including protecting healthy people from germs & pollution) and bans on them literally kill people.
@Trenton_Hoshiko Clarifying "mask" (a very broad category of anything worn over the face) vs "respirator" or 'medical grade/style mask' (need nuance there because a KN95/KF94 is more functional than a surgical mask but has to be marketed as non-medical) can help some, but also create more confusion. Even an ICE agent should be able to use a medical mask to protect the public from their germs (but should always display a visible, identifiable badge number).
@PedestrianError while it can be unpopular, I very much agree that cops should wear respirator masks to protect the public's health, while not wearing gaitors and full face coverings, and yes with other identifiers prominently displayed.
Since people generally understand "masking" for medical reasons I often use that term and then get more detailed that it should be a n95/kn95 rather than surgical or cloth. It is kinda a strange balance. Thanks for your thoughts :)
