Spent two weeks researching a strange question about gaming #miniatures, then found the answer was sitting unread in my gaming collection.

The question: Why do so many gamers insist miniatures scales (like 25mm) are measured to the height of a characters eyes?

@contrarian for some reason I remember thinking the 'eye height' thing was due to minis starting with historicals and their tendency to have tall hats. Eyes would make an easier measuring point than a hidden top of the head.

I'm glad to see that the true story makes more sense while still not being totally planned and logical

@tithegha The tall hat problem is often cited in those old discussions, but it still feels like an excuse to me (or maybe just a solution for the wrong problem). 1950s gamers trusted each other to know where a man's head ends, but 1990s gamers didn't?

#ToySoldier collectors still use the top-of-head scales, and they don't have the degree of confusion that gamers created by trying to change the measurement standard.
