I don't think UKGov should be allowed to require commercial software for the submission of data and information to government.

They should be required to use open standards and allow open source tools. Or provide one.

@NatalyaD totally agree. It really annoys me that we’ll have to use a commercial tool for my wife’s business when the time comes.
@jmb I think there should be a mass complaint to MPs about this HMRC badness. If enough MPs complain, HMRC may be forced to back off.
@NatalyaD It's all REST and OAuth. All the endpoints, arguments and return values are published. You do have to supply mandated 'anti-fraud' headers and pass validation before you can go live. I just wrote it all in PHP
@NatalyaD @etchedpixels It wouldn’t be hard for them to have an open api behind an oauth2 type access. Sign in to their system and then everything else can be done with an authentication token.
@NatalyaD, well, in PL it's all open standards but there are no FLOSS tools (and all freeware is pretty much dead). My best guess is that people don't have energy to deal with this shit, unless they're paid for it.
