Thomas@thedoctor At work, I've used two variants of the T14; so far I like the hardware, even if Windows 11 feels sluggish (i.e., just normal). A lightweight Linux desktop should fly.
The performance of my T460 (Core i5 6200U) is more than sufficient but I toy with the idea of buying a used T14 some day.
Which T14 hardware variant (or generation) do you use? Did you encounter any problems?
@tg9541 It's a Thinkpad 14s, Gen 2a, ADM Ryzen 5 PRO 5650 U with Radeon Graphics x 12, 16GB of RAM, 512GB NVME storage.
So far I'm very happy, I'm back on Fedora which has been way less weird to me than Ubuntu. Installation went flawlessly, even with secure boot (no idea if that was to be expected, to be honest) and so far everything works as intended. I've had the laptop for a grand total of 1.5 days so far so there may be any number of issues that haven't surfaced so far. Still, as it stands, I'm very happy with it.
@tg9541 Oh the one thing I wish was better is battery life. Not a big issue since I don't actually move my laptop around that much but it probably wouldn't last for a day's work.
@thedoctor under Windows 11, the T14 Intel Core i5 variants run no longer than a few hours; that's certainly far away from a working day.
@tg9541 I had hoped that the AMD CPU would last me longer than that but I haven't really tested the battery life yet. Just from what I've seen so far it does seem to get drained fairly quickly, though.
@thedoctor it appears to me that compute-for-long-battery-life has seen better days, and the use-case has moved to "mobile" and "tablet". I assume that the huge compute requirements of Office365 on of Windows 11 plays a role here. For example: I have to use Microsoft Teams and Outlook on a Windows PC at work. It's much less dependable than Teams and Outlook on Android.
