in my home town Wilhelmshaven a pirate castle existed in middle age where Störtebeker fleed from baltic sea into the north sea. He got shelter from frisian chief Edo Wiemken whose relatives , too were pirates. The castle ruin today is known as Siebetsburg. And a complete town section with 5000 citizens was named same since 1904.

Interesting. I have been to Wilhelmshaven two times (it's not that far from Oldenburg), but I haven't done much sightseeing. My impression was that the city was built from the ground up in the late 19th century, but if there are older remnants I might have to learn more about them.

oh, concerning your remark of a "young" city I may help with short discourse about history. Whv became the bigger city only since 1937 . Before it was only bound to the military port. All around - exactly to the frontline Grenzstrasse - belonged to Rüstringen ( OL ! ) . And so did Siebetsburg. But Heppens, Bant and Rüstringen existed since mediaval times. Fighting against huge floodings to regain new land from water. ( Groden )
