Ok. The weirdest thing that’s come out ot the whole Timothée Chalamet ballet-opera discourse is how many people seem to think Phantom of the Opera is an opera.

Or maybe I’m just being pedantic. What do you think?

Written by someone who will gladly sit through Die Zauberflöte or Six.

@robertsmelser O.o Phantom of the Opera is *set* in an opera house (and I think there might be a couple of songs that for that reason have operatic influences) ... but it's a musical. 1000000% musical, not opera.

@melindrea Oh yeah, definitely some homages. “Think of Me” blends musical theater and operatic styles. “Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh” is my fave. It’s a spot-on imitation of Italian opera that borders on, but doesn’t quite slip into, parody.

In fact, 14-year-old me was fooled into thinking it was a real scene from a real opera.

@robertsmelser I hadn't really thought about it being from a real opera ... but I am slightly saddened it isn't <.< "Seraphimo, away with this pretence! You cannot speak ... but kiss me in my husband's absence."
