Similarly, I met and became friends with a Swedish woman because I had such a hard time placing her accent that i just had to ask her about it and we got to talking. I could tell there was Scandinavian in there, but it was really throwing me which one. Turned out she'd lived in York so her accent in English was more mixed than I was used to.
