40 years ago tonight, the grateful dead in #maine, their last of 6 visits to the cumberland county civic center in the deadhead stronghold of portland, though garcia returns in ’93. with the only performance of the classic-to-me “revolutionary hamstrung blues” by phil lesh, bobby petersen, & brent mydland, lesh’s only original of the ‘80s. spring ’86, show #7.

3/27/86 portland, ME: one of the year’s highlights is last debut of the tour, the only performance of REVOLUTIONARY HAMSTRUNG BLUES, by lesh, mydland, & bobby petersen, lyricist of NEW POTATO CABOOSE & UNBROKEN CHAIN. lesh’s 1st original since PASSENGER in ’77. dense, sometimes dylan-y lyrics, mydland as semi-lead singer, but often more a duet. sad it never happened again. draft for album-in-progress, presumably scrapped with petersen’s sudden death in early ’87. https://www.whitegum.com/introjs.htm?/songfile/REVOLHAM.HTM [2/6]

1st WANG DANG DOODLE since 10/84. fun SUPPLICATION JAM > PROMISED LAND still feels like it needs a set-up. 12-minute CHINA CAT SUNFLOWER > I KNOW YOU RIDER has wiggy garcia/mydland peak. 66-minute ESTIMATED PROPHET > EYES OF THE WORLD > DRUMZ > SPACE > SPANISH JAM > TRUCKIN’ > WHARF RAT > SUGAR MAGNOLIA. weir’s tuning goes awry (like a sick doorbell) just before blazing EYES (150 bpm?!), with extended full-band jam & chord-y garcia/DRUMZ outro. 1st SPANISH JAM since 3/85 properly majestic.
