A Redesign for Profiles

Sharing the design thinking for the new look coming to profile pages.

Mastodon Blog

Side by side comparison. I particularly like the more compact design of custom fields.

@stefan I see the value in making the custom fields more compact, but they're misaligned in the new version and look jumbled to me. Makes it difficult to read/comprehend on the fly.

@fembot Misaligned? They're just going for more of a masonry-like layout.

I think it looks more modern than a table. But personal preference, obviously.

Masonry

Cascading grid layout library

@stefan Right, and maybe this won't resonate but to me it reads like a table where each row's columns are in random widths, which impacts reading speed and comprehension. It's just two rows in your example, but the effect is the same for me. Ymmv!

@fembot Yeah, I definitely get where you're coming from. And I think others will agree with you.

I've seen folks reaching to the Mastodon team, and them following up with people, so they are definitely listening, and I expect to some of this to change before the updates are more widely released.

Pretty sensible approach!
