Ooof, I forgot that #knäckebröd expands in your stomach.

Not something you want to just inhale, even though it's really tasty and crunchy.

Silly me grew upon American "toast," that has about as much substance as, well, our cable news.

Ow. Urp. Ow.

@rl_dane My culture is relevant! Hadn’t in my wildest dreams imagined this was something non-nordics eat – is it common or is there a reason you ran i to it?

@o_O

😄

No, it's not particularly common in the U.S., but it's common enough to be found in any supermarket, even 30 years ago (Wasa brand). But I don't recall any non-Nordics ever mentioning it, other than maybe people related to/married to Nordics.

I only know about it because my aunt lived in Sweden for about a decade in the 70s and 80s, and she brought some of that culture with her when she joined us in the U.S.

We usually get ours from IKEA, although the Wasa brand sold in stores is pretty good, too, and has lot of flavor varieties.

I do like the round ones, though. ;)

IKEA used to sell their own (or their own re-labeled) large knäkebröd (the kind with a hole in the middle), but they stopped selling that here a couple years back. They've started carrying another band in that same size/shape, but you get about half as many loves per package as the old ones.

I mainly eat it with breakfast (usually with some sharp cheddar, some hard-boiled egg and sriracha), but it also goes really well with hearty Persian stews.

@rl_dane just as I felt I had a clear picture of where you were going you throw in the persian stews at the end 😀i think if i have bread with stews or soups it’s always soft bread.

I usually have it as a snack cheese and/or/neither butter. Sometimes with egg and the cheap caviar thing we have (kalles kaviar or similar).

Do you also have skorpor? 👀 A boat shaped hard bread, often sweet and mildly cardamom flavoured.

@o_O

No, we don't have it, and I want some now 😄

I'm on board for anything that has cardamom. I literally pound cardamom pods in a mortar and pestle to add to tea, although the cardamom itself is very slow to actually steep.

They sell cardamom tea, and it's amazing. I wonder how they make it so flavorful.

@o_O

Knäckebröd works great in/with soups and stews, because it absorbs a lot of liquid and becomes softer.

With a really thick stew as we're wont to make, the knäckebröd can almost replace your spoon. 😄

@rl_dane i will give it a try 😀 maybe it will work well with bœuf bourguignon next time i make it 😋

@o_O

I think it would! It would also tone down a very strongly-flavored dish nicely.
