People: We want to live in this neighborhood because it has cool little bookstores and shops an and restaurants and a genuine culture.

Developers: I got you. *proceeds to bulldoze cool little bookstores and shops and restaurants to put up cheaply made million dollar condos until the area is nothing but soulless housing*

Developers (dusting off hands): My work here is done.

#urbanism

I live under the bizarre notion that if you work a full time job in a city you should be able to live in that city and also that if you don’t let people do that, the city becomes a theme park.

I honestly don’t know of anywhere left in the West that is getting this right on any large scale. Maybe Paris? Mamdani’s trying in NYC.

@rk a combination theme park + dystopia
@rk don’t get me started. That is happening here right now but with the double whammy of food costs so GD high and rent so GD high that all the hip restaurants are closing like crazy.

@rk surely you don't mean austin...?

god don't even get me started on how much i hate that fucking city now.

@rothko

I genuinely don’t know of any Western city doing this right.

@rk it's all about the $$$.

@rk also,

People: ... because it has artists and ethnic diversity....

Developer: *evicts all the artists and ethnically diverse residents*

@rk then you stay at the hotel in it and its cafe, which serves Starbucks exclusively, is a simulacrum of a cute little book shop
