What a choice. I either stick on iOS 18, which has a vulnerable browser and I'm not allowed to not use it, or I update to iOS 26 which will apparently make my phone unusable because the new liquid UI requires too much GPU power for my 13 mini (plus age verification?).

Depressed about this choice. Even if I take a "third way" of leaving iOS again, which I'm gonna with the next phone, I was hoping to put it off until Christmas because phones are expensive so I have to do something now at least.

@sil for what it’s worth I’m on a 13 Mini with iOS 26 and while it has its slow moments it’s absolutely not unusable.
@robinwhittleton well, I'm updating, so we'll see. Sigh. I assume I have "provide my credit card number or be treated like a child" ahead of me too.
@sil Settings / Display / Liquid Glass / Tinted solves the worst UI excesses (leaving aside performance)

@robinwhittleton cool, will look at that.

First thing that came up after iOS 26 update, before anything else, before I even get to see my own home screen, is: prove you're 18.

I have told it, I'll do it later, and we'll see what it is that I'm not allowed to do.

@robinwhittleton also, piss off "Games" inserting itself on my home screen from Apple! grr
@sil ah right, that’s a UK thing sigh. You’re in luck though, according to the BBC, Ofcom called it a “real win for children and families”.
@robinwhittleton Ofcom: not high on my good people list right now, what with the online services won't-anyone-think-of-the-children stuff (admittedly Parliament's fault, but nonetheless) and Rusbridger's recent reporting about GB News and Ofcom's startling lack of willingness to do anything about it. bah humbug.
@sil @robinwhittleton i complained to ofcom about something this week, only to reply an autoreply that they don't respond to individual complaints any more. Worse than useless
@robinwhittleton @sil Or even more (having also just updated the same phone), Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency (and maybe Increase Contrast)
@dracos @sil I had that to start with, but enough stuff was straight up broken that when they added the tinted option I switched to that. Worth a try though.
