From @chatcontrol site creator, in a HN comment:

> In an unprecedented move, the #EPP is attempting to force a repeat vote tomorrow, seeking to overturn the otherwise principled March 11 decision and instead favouring indiscriminate mass #surveillance. In an attempt to avoid this, the Greens earlier today tried to remove the repeat vote from the agenda tomorrow, but this was voted down.

> As such, [today], the Parliament will once again vote on Chat Control. And unlike March 11, multiple groups are split on the vote, including S&D and Renew. The EPP remains unified in its support for #ChatControl. If you are a #European citizen, I urge you to contact your #MEPs by e-mail and, if you have time, by calling. We really are in the final stretch here and every action counts. I have just updated the website to reflect the votes today, allowing a more targeted approach.

Getting very sick of the rinse and repeat cycle of us surveillance support.

How much are EU Ministers being paid for supporting meta and co

@Kerplunk @chatcontrol

About that HN comment stating that bribing is de facto legal.. a number of years ago there was this consumer interest series on Dutch TV (forgot name) where presenter Teun van der Keuken (known from Tony's Chocolonely slave-free chocolate) investigated the lobbying practices in Brussels.

It was really shocking and eye-opening to see how some of these MEP's only function was to accept legislation proposals written entirely by lobbyists, which they blindly supported and helped bring to a vote. Literally putting these documents onto the pile without ever reading them.

It was also painfully obvious that an EU that wants to be more and better than it is today, must find a way to deal with this legalised corruption.

@smallcircles @Kerplunk @chatcontrol this is why Brexit was important and just how far the EU has deviated from the free-trade organisation it was set up as.
@EF @smallcircles @Kerplunk @chatcontrol The EU was *never* just a free-trade organization. What part of the goal of political union did you not understand? Might be an idea to do some reading about the history the organization instead of projecting your own preferences. A key reason for Brexit was British pig-ignorance about the EU.

@samueljohnson @smallcircles @Kerplunk @chatcontrol not going to assume where you live or what you may or may not know. The presumption the British do not understand the EU is a bold statement. Many Brits voted leave because Leave were ignorant and arrogant in their approaches whereas Remain were hammering the cost of membership, immigration and interference.

Based on recent 'policies' returning to vote due to the pressure form lobbiests and the corruption within the EU (read the recent reports on this), not only has the EU stepped well outside is original scope it is now doing the bidding for others rather than for the good of its citizens.

If you wish to believe the EU is marvellous then do so. Yes they have done some wonderful things. Many of their actions and a lot of their inaction outweigh the good and the bitter treatment of certain countries during disagreements is appauling.

European Union

@EF @samueljohnson @Kerplunk @chatcontrol

Yea. I consider EU far from marvellous, am often exasperated by what's going on there. But it is also the best we have, and I'm glad my country is in the EU. One upside of the dark outlook in world politics, and the New World Order et al, is that it will give such a shock to the system, that more radical change and innovation is now possible where it wasn't before.

@smallcircles @samueljohnson @Kerplunk @chatcontrol we can but hope the EU starts standing up against the tyrany of certain countries and comes out as a better organisation. It needs reform of itself as well and perhaps redefining its goals without eroding national identities and accepting national and regional differences.

Also feel it needs to actually take action against the ongoing genocides, stop importing stuff from aggressive 'partners' and help countries in desperate need.

@EF @samueljohnson @Kerplunk @chatcontrol

💯 It needs true leadership, and not all the populist performative circus and beating around the bush.

@smallcircles @samueljohnson @Kerplunk @chatcontrol banning professional politicians would be a start (in all governments). They should get the national average wage and have no other jobs/roles.

@EF @smallcircles @Kerplunk @chatcontrol Fantastic. First you demonstrate you know nothing about the EU now you peddle populist tripe.

Donald Trump's chief attractive quality to his uneducated base was his not being a professional politician (his being a rapist, a serial bankrupt, a crook and a moron didnt matter, and later even an insurrectionist). Fools learn the hard way eventually but everyone pays for their ignorance.

You're sure the national average wage will attract the best people? 🙄

@samueljohnson @EF @Kerplunk @chatcontrol

This is veering too off-topic for me. Please untag me.

@smallcircles No worries, I appreciated your comments on the EU which you rightly identified as a peace project first and foremost. We don't need any persuasion on this on the island of Ireland and remain furious with liars and fools on the neighbouring island still peddling victim narratives and simple solutions to complex problems--and any fellow travelers keen on smashing the EU for their own gain.

@samueljohnson

We are all bombarded by doom and gloom and continually info overloaded with a lot of noise and misinformation in our information streams. Much of that purposefully done with the aim to influence, divide, and drive apart regular people who otherwise share very similar basic needs. Who have the same interests to live in democracy and freedom. People may be misguided or right on the mark, but if in discussion on matters of differing opinion we engage on basis of aggressive confrontation, then it can only serve to repel the other, not bring people closer together. Falling for the divide & conquer trap of our real opponents, the oligarchs and autocrats. I frequently say that in progressive circles we divide ourselves to be conquered :)

@smallcircles Fair points, well made. Toxic ignorance on the neighbouring island, on the part of what have been famously called "slow learners" is a threat to peace on this one -- after centuries of colonial domination and conflict -- and it does sometimes need calling out. Truth is they don't GAF and a fair number (not so much here, yet) are sockpuppets
