Oh! I see... So, now if you're subscribed to a YouTube channel and they do a collaboration, with a different channel, it appears on your Subscription feed. Like, even if you had no idea the other channel existed.

All right, ok, that's neat-o.

#TodayILearned #TIL

@Yuriel Most of the time it's neat, but I unsubscribed from a channel that does good video essays because they use the collaboration feature to shove their fucking podcast channel into my feed. I do not want to listen to your horrifying current events/politics podcast.

@Gulleko Ah ha! The other shoe drops.

Yeah, what Youtube REALLY fucking needs is a way to block channels.

It's been what? Two decades, and still no such feature.

(Now that I think about it, they will never do it. They don't want you to control what you see.)

@Yuriel @Gulleko I'm using a third party client that lets me block YouTube channels but only in certain sections.

I don't know if that functionality that YouTube has or if it's the app.

@retrosponge @Yuriel Youtube does have a block feature (buried deep in people's channel info last time I checked), but it only stops them from seeing and interacting with you, it doesn't stop them from showing up in your feed.

@Gulleko @Yuriel This option in smart tube that I use on my Fire TV can block channels and it will never come up in the suggestions again.

The only problem is if you're searching for something and find horrible channels you can't block them from there. Which is frustrating because if I'm searching for a movie trailer, if I come across reaction videos, I will block every single fucking channel that does one if I can.

@retrosponge That does seem useful, but it not being a feature of the search seems like an oversight. But I mostly use the subscriptions feed and only go to the algorithm home feed when I run out of the videos I actually asked for. 😅
@Gulleko I am subscribed to so much shit. But I don't want to unsubscribe in case the channel post something good and I wind up missing it.😂
@retrosponge Same. For example I'm subbed to the LRR livestream vod channel, but I only watch a few of them. But I can't risk missing Watch+Play! 😂
@Gulleko I do skip a bunch of their content, but yeah, I can't unsubscribe.😂

@retrosponge @Gulleko

Just don't forget to unsub from the ones that went rotten . . .

@Fuzz_Ra @Gulleko Oh I have. There was one I unsubscribed from last year that I was starting to find toxic and I'm glad I did because I've heard he's now got balls deep in AI creating dodgy teen girl images for his channel. (but not enough to cross over the line and get kicked for porn.)

@retrosponge @Gulleko

Grim.

The only good thing generative shit did for me was getting me to max out my RAM so I could explore the tech on local hardware.

It was interesting to check but, ultimately, a bit crap at everything and grilled me alive by sucking up a fortune in electricity.

Still, My horribly tweaked DDR4 system is going to be more than adequate for any software somebody tries to sell any time soon . . .

@Fuzz_Ra @Gulleko I did fiddle locally when it first appeared and I wasn't aware it was based on content theft.

It's so frustrating because some of it is great technology, but I can't in good conscience use it.

I mean my girlfriend is literally involved in a class action lawsuit against one of the AI companies for stealing her work.

@retrosponge @Gulleko

Yeah. There's actually some gold in it as a step upgrade from traditional expert systems.

The rest is a scam being run at scale on financiers. The bait is being able to have their business without having to pay for workers and those cretinous mooks are spunking all over the idea. What we see is just the painted backdrop.
