@mcnado I've been out of the industry for quite some time, but I believe they are still required to get a criminal history check done by the airport to get an airport access badge. Need the airport badge to get beyond the checkpoint with prohibited items (weapons).
They could very easily be on the public (non secure) side of the airport with no check though.

That means bypassing the fingerprinting, background checks, and training airport workers usually need — a move that could weaken the challenge-and-report culture airports rely on to keep secure areas secure.
