This is interesting. Not that I want anyone to share this information far and wide, especially where surveillance might be violating civil rights.

Meet Rayhunter: A New Open Source Tool from EFF to Detect Cellular Spying

Rayhunter is a new open source tool we’ve created that runs off an affordable mobile hotspot that we hope empowers everyone, regardless of technical skill, to help search out cell-site simulators (CSS) around the world.

@reallyflygreg And just in case they haven't made the information more visible yet... The Orbic device (possibly others as well?) requires a sim card to be installed. ANY blank sim card will do, I spent $4 on ebay and got a new one, stuck it in the device, and it started working right away, but you do need to have this card so the device can talk to the cell towers.

And no, this won't catch state-of-the-art tower spoofers, but it will probably spot anything the average city or state is using.

@reallyflygreg I got one of these a couple of months ago before the last big protest and was satisfied to see that apparently my local law-enforcement is not using the equipment that RayHunter is supposed to detect? But I'm sure that could change soon... which reminds me, I should charge it and set it up for Saturday just out of curiosity.
