Mostly for @theantlady : ant trails in the botanical garden have been worn 2cm wide and almost that deep. What's interesting to me is that they lead to a finger sized hole with virtually no hill around it. Maybe the ants carry out the tailings the way they're carrying food in?

Yup, leafcutters! You can appreciate why they've cleared the trunk trail - cumbersome to carry leaves through thick vegetation. And they are often polydomous.
