Yeeears ago on birbsite (when it was very difrerent and I was active) I noticed an uptick of weirdly antagonistic or pointless mansplaining replies to my tweets. I realized I had changed my profile picture to a female knight drawing: not a portrait, just a drawing I made for a business card. I swapped to a male character drawing (from my then webcomic)... and it calmed down.
(also haven't had the nasty once anywhere since I've been an eevee).
