Mastodon is redesigning user profiles to simplify the experience and better appeal to mainstream users and organizations.

This reminds me of Richard Hendricks trying to gain users by organizing group teaching sessions.

Same energy.

Silicon Valley | Pied Piper Users Finally Get It

@Sarahp Good overview, Sarah. Thanks for the explainer and for covering the fediverse.
@Sarahp
Cool. When counting users, did you take into account that many Mastodon servers don't federate with the flagship servers and thus aren't included in their stats?

@Sarahp

Is anyone getting errors when trying to look at anyone's profile page or even your own profile page.

I haven't been able to see anyone's profile page all day, all I get is this error.

@Sarah Perez 💙 this shit again ..
However, this system is also more complicated compared with signing up for a traditional social network like X. On Mastodon, users have to pick a server to join and have different timelines how do those people ever manage to buy a car, trousers, a table for their appartment, go shopping for food if having a choice is the overwhelming factor?

@jabgoe2089 it’s not the choice in itself that is the problem. The problem is that people don’t know how their choice affects the outcome and why their choice matters. They need to understand why there even is a choice to make an informed one.

And statements like yours don’t exactly make the #fediverse more welcoming.

@Tywele @jabgoe2089 and I think the other issue is that the alternatives are (and have been) easier to sign up. So users don't expect the additional complexity.
@germanio so people should be overwhelmed when they enter a shop and ask: i want a trouser! and to the reply: what kind of trouser? they say: aahh! to much informational complexity! i don't know what to do!
do you also need a t shirt?
help help, i'm going somplace where i'm not burdened with such intellectual shit!

@jabgoe2089 haha I don't think so, the process to buy a trouser is the same everywhere, right?

idk how the sign up process is nowadays, I've done that once in 2018 to never look back 😅 (best decision ever!)

@germanio but you dont know yet how the act of buying this particular trouser will affect you later!! :-)

but, seriously, if this is true, that this need to choose is an actual obstacle for new participants, then i think, be it so. it serves as an intelligence filter. i don't want to get in touch with people who are intellectually unable to choose between diffent boxes to check ...

This was the boilerplate, go-to techy-mag-bro hot take over four years ago when I got started here

Somebody seriously needs to get a new copy writer

That dead horse turned to dust and blew away years ago

@FinchHaven sfba what i think is so jarring is that these selfacclaimed tech journalist are keeping repeating this nonsense. just to make normal people go away ...

@FinchHaven @germanio @Sarahp @Tywele @jabgoe2089

Yes, but definitely appreciate the generally positive coverage from Sarah, who is perhaps the only mainstream tech journalist who covers Mastodon at all.

Thanks Sarah!
