I wish anyone told me earlier (in relation to #selfhosting of webapps, LAMP stack):
- increase your innodb_buffer_pool_size in mariadb settings from the default 128Mb to ... bigger.

This little maneuver dropped CPU utilization by 20% and there are no spikes anymore on my amateur servers.
