Rear differential casing on 2019 #Subaru Ascent has rusted out at 105k kms and declared dead. In service was April 2020.

Mechanic found a used replacement, will be about $1500 to prepare and install it.

Not too impressed with that, it's not particularly old and something like that should wear out seals or gearing long before the casing corrodes through. Ottawa's roads are damn salty.

Was driving fine, but leaking fluid, and disaster impending.

@johnefrancis Eeeeeek. That sucks. 😭 That's a pretty short life for such a major component if I'm not mistaken.

I recall my old Subaru being particularly rusty...so bad I had to get much of it cut out and replaced with new metal and body fill to pass the safety inspections here in NS. 😅
