@LyricalGarfield @quasirealsmiths The alt text describes "garland characters". Is this alt text generated by AI?

@aparrish

@varx @LyricalGarfield @quasirealsmiths ulgghchhh yeah you're right, i will be more intentional about boosting this account in the future!

@aparrish @varx @LyricalGarfield the only defense I have of it is it's entirely local on a container in a VM. I am not a fan but there's a trade-off between no attempts at ALT and whatever randomness it tries to spit out.

Some comics actually have transcripts which I'd prefer to use instead, but GoComics is inconsistent with that as wellso can't rely on it

@quasirealsmiths @aparrish @LyricalGarfield I'd very much prefer no alt text to alt text that's misleading (or in this case, complete garbage).

(To be clear, I think the bot is fun and you should totally keep running it! But ditch the auto-descriptions.)

@varx @aparrish @LyricalGarfield yeah I would prefer no descriptions myself honestly (I was always just putting the ALT Text as the transcript if it was available and adding the lyrics that replaced the text.... and then I got people yelling at me for that not being "descriptive enough")

can't win.

@quasirealsmiths @aparrish @LyricalGarfield There's definitely some difference of opinion in the community about where AI descriptions fall on the harmful-to-helpful spectrum.

Several blind people I've heard from have said that AI descriptions are worse, but it's not universal. I know that for myself, when my internet connection is bad and I'm relying on alt text, I'd *much* rather have no text than misleading text.

Maybe the best way to address this is to include "AI description follows:"?
