What this chart confirms is that the top 1% are closer to the LOWEST tier than they are to the next higher tier, and far FAR away from the top tier.

This is what confounds me: Why do they support policies that disproportionately benefit those above them more at their OWN expense and that of those below them?

It's a false hope that by supporting the greed of those so much richer than themselves, they can somehow join that club someday, but they never will.
