1/n Have been watching this Italian referendum on #JudicialReforms and the post failure assessments regarding Premier #GiorgiaMeloni and her right wing coalition. In the lead up to her election I’d taken at face value the portrayel in mainstream media of her “far right coalition” as gaining ground.
In reflection clearly the “far right” in #Italy right now bears little resemblance to what is far right here. Meloni appears to be more like what traditional conservatives used to be here…
2/n…thirty years ago. Portraits of extremism seemed not to have panned out. She does seem too intelligent for extremism. Maybe we missed something.
In any case referendum success or failure is of more consequence in terms of bearing witness to public sentiment. In this case the sentiment might have been “the courts are too slow, too expensive, and too slow and expensive. Fix that first “.
