Last year I bought a very noisy (unintentionally) external 16TB HDD for my TimeMachine backups for my main Mac.

That was when I learnt about sorbothane hemispheres, which did a lot to dampen the drive noise for me, but not perfect. Over time the leftover noise in my office has been driving me nuts and this morning I was about to pull the trigger on a $800 replacement drive when I suddenly wondered whether it was more a problem of the drive sitting on fairly thin particle board. Put a thick notepad underneath it and ... silence. $800 saved. Sometimes the cheap solutions are the best.

@backupbear

You can buy packs of 6 30cm square by 1cm thick cork pads for such things ...

I use them to prevent hot pot burns on benches ... bigger than the usual so the air fryer basket fits nicely ... and all sorts of noise dulling things ...

@backupbear what shore were your sorbothane pads?
@dkalintsev size? 3/4 inch diameter according to the eBay listing
@backupbear I meant shore hardness, a number like "30", "50" or so. The smaller the number, the softer it is.
@dkalintsev Ah OK - didn't know that was the term. I can't see that in the purchase details.
