@alex I just remembered this for the first time in a long time:

I was a kid and answered the doorbell. It was a door-to-door evangelist. My family was church-going, but in a kind of melIow way, and I had no concept of proselytizing.

He asked if I wanted to live forever.

I gave due consideration to the physical and mental concerns that might go with such a thing and said "no."

I don't remember exactly what happened next, but he didn't stay at our doorstep much longer.
